The Somerset village of East Coker on the Monarch’s Way has immense connections with the great poet, Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888 – 1965); his ancestors came from here before emigrating to the USA in 1659, it is in the village church that his ashes are interred and the second poem of his monumental 1940 sequence, Four Quartets, is named East Coker. The famous first line ‘In my beginning is my end’, refers to his family history.
